Microsoft Corp.’s GitHub has announced a collaboration with Anthropic and Google (a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.) to integrate their artificial intelligence models into a coding assistant used by millions of software developers.

Initially, users will be able to interact with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet for chat and inquiries, as GitHub revealed during its Universe conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. Eventually, these models will be incorporated into the core functionality of GitHub Copilot, which generates code based on simple prompts.

After partnering with OpenAI a few years ago, GitHub was a pioneer in using generative artificial intelligence to automate tedious aspects of the coding process. While GitHub will continue to use OpenAI models as the default option, developers will have the flexibility to switch to the models from Google and Anthropic if they prefer, according to GitHub Chief Executive Officer Thomas Dohmke in a recent interview.

Since acquiring GitHub in 2018, Microsoft has allowed the platform to maintain a diverse array of partnerships, even with competitors. GitHub aims to provide customers with choices and accommodate those using Google’s and Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud services. The Anthropic model will operate on the Amazon Web Services network.

Additionally, Microsoft enables its Azure cloud customers to access models from providers other than OpenAI, including Meta Inc. and Mistral; however, it does not currently offer models from Google or Anthropic.

GitHub also announced a preview of an AI project called Spark, which allows users to create mini-applications—such as a travel log with maps or an event RSVP tracker—using everyday language prompts instead of programming code.
